As we’ve nearly reached the middle of summer, you may notice additional smells around your house. The warmth and sunshine help grow bacteria which can result in the form of heavy smells or stenches. Before you contact a professional cleaner or schedule a carpet steam cleaning, you may like to try these DIY tips first. We’ve put together some of the most tried and true tips to reduce these smells, using items you have lying around the house.
Stinky Sink? Try this quick tip
If you have a garbage disposal in your kitchen sink, this is the quickest and easiest fix for you! Just cut a lemon into thirds or halves and stick them down your drain. Turn the water on and let the disposal run for a few seconds. You will have a lemony fresh scent coming from your drain. For upkeep of your sink, pour boiling water down your drain from time to time. This will help strip food residue from your drains and reduce the number of bacteria lurking in the pipes.
Removing smells from your bins
No matter how sturdy the bin bag, there always seems to be a leak. With the warm winter sun allowing the smells to marinate, you may be tempted to get new bins altogether. However, there’s no need to do that. For the initial wash, you may want to give it a deeper clean. You can mix together 5 parts boiling water to 1 part vinegar and swoosh this around the bin. If you have a favourite essential oil, add a few drops to the mixture to get a nice scent afterwards. For bin maintenance, try drizzling a little bit of bicarb soda into the bin to naturally deodorise and soak up any new leaks. You also can put a napkin or newspaper at the bottom of your bin bag to soak up any additional liquids before it gets to the bin.
How to remove carpet odours between carpet steam cleaning services
Whether your carpets smell from your pets or because of mildew, there is an easy fix for carpet odours. Simply mix together 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water and lightly spray across the desired area. As the vinegar dries, the smell will neutralise, leaving you with a much fresher smelling carpet. If it’s been longer than 6 months since your last carpet steam cleaning, it may be time to call your local carpet cleaners. At Wizard Cleaning, we will not only remove the source of the smell, but we also include a free deodoriser with your carpet steam cleaning service.
Remember, when trying out DIY solutions, we always recommend to sample some on a small, inconspicuous spot first.
