Now that Christmas has ended and the fun has been had, many of us are left with the after-effects of it. If you’re anything like most other people, chances are your carpets have been left with a few stains and both your tiles and grout are looking worse for wear. If this is the case, then don’t fret as the solution for getting your home back into a pre-Christmas state is not far away!
To help out with the post-Christmas clean up, we’ve put together a simple list of cleaning duties which should help overcome the woes that this post-Christmas tidy up can bring about.
Firstly, dust … everything!
Even before you grab the mop or vacuum cleaner, we always recommend giving your home a thorough dusting. Dust down your bench tops, walls, furniture and cabinets. The reason we always recommend starting with dusting is that all the dirt and debris in the dust will eventually end up on your floors. By dusting first, you can avoid needing to sweep/mop twice.
Now, it’s time to assess the carpets
If you’ve found that your carpets only appear to have dirt and dust on top of them, you may get away with just giving them a thorough vacuum. If you have a high-quality vacuum cleaner, this could be particularly effective in giving your carpets some extra time before they need a serious clean.
Let’s suppose that you’ve vacuumed your carpets and along the way, it’s revealed a few new stains. If these stains happened over the Christmas period, chances are that you may still be able to get them out with a homemade cleaning solution. NOTE, be careful not to rub the stain deeper into the carpet. If this fails, it’s probably best to call in the professionals.
By calling in professional carpet cleaners not too long after the stain, you’ll have a higher chance of them completely removing the stain. We also recommend having a professional carpet clean if your carpets experienced more than ordinary foot traffic. Generally, during Christmas, our carpets become in contact with higher amounts of germs and bacteria as a result of more people entering the home, so it’s best to act with full force instead of merely vacuuming.
How are the tiles and grout?
As with carpets, our tiles and grout come into contact with more scuffs, stains, spills and germs over the Christmas period due to the increased number of visitors. If your grout has begun to discolour or your tiles have lost their lustrous shine, then it might be a great opportunity to have them professionally cleaned also.
For those of you wanting to try and clean your tiles and grout, you can always have a go with a bi-carb solution which may be useful! Use the bi-carb for the grout and try out lemon juice, baking soda and dishwashing liquid for the tile. If this fails though, it may be worthwhile to get one of the cleaning wizards in. Not only will it save you a lot of time scrubbing away and buying new (or concocting your own) cleaning products, but chances are the end result will be much more impressive!
