Is Jif Good for Cleaning Grout? Our Best Tile & Grout Cleaning Tips
When your kitchen splashback, floors and shower tiles start losing their shine, it’s time for a tile and grout clean. Clean tiles look better, and getting rid of built-up bacteria makes your home healthier too.
One of the questions we hear most is whether Jif is good for cleaning grout. Here’s the honest answer, followed by our top tips to keep your tiles shiny and your grout spotless.
Is Jif Good for Cleaning Grout?
For light surface marks, yes, as long as you’re gentle. Jif cream cleanser is a mild abrasive, so it lifts surface grime off glazed tiles and the top layer of grout well.
For grout, there are a few catches. Grout is porous and softer than tile, so hard scrubbing with an abrasive wears it down over time. Cream cleanser can also settle into the grout lines if it isn’t rinsed off properly, leaving a dull film that attracts more dirt. And Jif won’t shift deep stains or mould that has soaked into the grout.
If you use it, apply a small amount with a soft brush or non-scratch pad, work it in lightly, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Test a small, hidden patch first, avoid it on natural stone and polished finishes, and never mix it with other cleaners.
Remove Stains and Discolouration from Tiles
Tiles can stain from built-up dirt, dust or mould over time. For most marks, Jif and a non-scratch pad will do the job: apply a little, scrub gently, then rinse or wipe it away. It suits most glazed tiles, but try it first on a small, less obvious area to make sure it doesn’t affect the finish.
Remove Mould and Mildew from Grout
For light mould and mildew, this one makes a big difference to a kitchen or bathroom. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water, spray the grout, leave it for a few minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse well with clean water. Vinegar is acidic, so keep it for occasional deep cleans rather than every week, as regular use can weaken cement-based grout. Skip it on natural stone, and never mix it with bleach.
Brighten the Grout Between Your Tiles
Finish a deep clean by brightening the grout. Make a paste of bicarb soda and water, spread it along the grout lines, leave it for a few minutes, then scrub with your brush and rinse. Work it between all the tiles for an even colour.
Keep Tiles and Grout Cleaner for Longer
Once your tiles and grout are clean, airflow is your best friend. Run the exhaust fan or open a window after showers and while washing up, and wipe moisture off tiled surfaces so mould has nothing to feed on. For a full bathroom routine, see our guide to cleaning bathroom tiles and grout.
